We have started the new year with plans to do extra physical training in hopes of being ready for the coming fire season. The Shasta County Fire Department and the California Department of Forestry mailed residents of the area we cover a 2003 calendar and if you complete each task as pictured for each month, fire season will not be a worry to you. Your home and belongings will have been protected by the individual who values them the most, you.

We have three individuals who have requested to join our department and we are always looking for more. It takes only three to man an engine or rescue, however, the more volunteers you have the quicker the job gets done and the quicker everyone can go home. We train every Thursday, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Fire Control III will be held February 1 and 2 near Bella Vista School and live fire will be the target of training. Pumping and hose advancement will also be covered and individuals who attend will also get practical experience with their Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).

We are spending each training session practicing vehicle extrication. This is the perfect chance to use all the gear, i.e., jaws, hydraulic spreaders, air chisel, rock bar, hi-lo jack and chains. The engines will be used for lighting, so Thursday nights will be pretty noisy and bright. Please remember that lots of personnel will be moving around and visitors from other stations will also be present, so please slow down when passing by the fire hall.

The 4-H Fire Cadet project is still going strong. You will be able to tell the 4-H members from the fire fighters by the color of their gear. The yellow turnouts belong to the cadets.

Clearing around homes is still being done and please be careful as you burn your small piles of cuttings. Have a shovel, pail of water or a charged hose where you are burning. A little prevention goes a long ways.
